About the Book
Fly, Fly Again is a clever and charming story about Jenny, a child who dreams of flying. After years of tinkering in makeshift laboratories and studying the mechanics of flight with her pet Hawk, Jenny builds a plane—only to crash into the yard of her skateboarding neighbor, Jude, and his pet cheetah. Working with Jude, Jenny successfully learns how to control and fly her plane. This unique story includes lessons about problem solving, teamwork, and determination as well as family-friendly information about the basics of aeronautical engineering like lift, drift, and more!

My Review
This children’s picture book has a charming rhyme scheme to introduce concepts of flight in a fanciful manner. Jenny acts on her interest in flight by observing nature, learning facts, and teaming up with her friend to design and create a flying machine. The authors have used simple, memorable language and cooperative characters to promote the lessons described above. The illustrations are bright, colorful, and attractive and show the story along with the words.

Jenny watches a hawk to see how natural flight works in birds, and then experiments with craft materials and toys to devise a flying machine. As she continues to figure out what makes flight work, she “falls” into her neighbor boy Jude’s yard. Jude shares her interest and together they work on a controlled flight and even bigger dreams of space.

Charmingly illustrated with exotic animal friends, Fly, Fly Again is a good story to introduce basic flight vocabulary and teach young children the importance of dreaming big, teamwork, and persistence.

A brief interview with the author
Where did you grow up /live now?
I grew up in El Paso, Texas and moved to Austin to attend UT.  I currently live in Austin with my husband and three children.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
Since I was very young, I have always loved to write.  I have also had a passion for children’s causes from a very young age, and writing this book was a great way to give back to children’s education with our proceeds benefiting UNICEF and Buzz Aldrin Ventures.

What inspired your story?
Our story was inspired by my husband Jordan who has had a love of flight since he was a child.  Our family is in the aviation industry and our 3 children have also developed a love for flying.  We are constantly teaching them the basics of flight in our day to day life, and this book was the perfect way to do so for all kids that may be interested in flying.

About the Book
Wonderful adventures and challenges are on their way!

In this NEW marvelous, colorfully illustrated book, the smart and funny parrot named Arthur has to face his worst nightmare, Evil Hawk. This dangerous predator stole Arthur’s golden feather and got away with it. Now, the brave parrot has to get it back.

During this exciting adventure, Arthur will encounter many trials, meet new friends, and challenge himself.

My Review
Borrowing heavily from the idea that often the things we think we want most are already at our feet, Katy Ant's new Awesome Adventure story features Arthur the orphan parrot who takes advantage of a physical quirk to create a wealthy but lonely life. Arthur's golden feather may or may not grant wishes to those who visit. While Arthur has plenty of company, none of them are friends. When the feather is stolen, Arthur gathers a awesome, curious bunch of folks on a journey to retrieve their stolen items from the Evil Hawk who took his feather.

Arthur's lesson comes at the end of the journey when he realizes his own wish has been granted. Lovingly and simply told and lusciously illustrated, parents and kids alike will fall in love with Arthur and his companions.

What's a Forever Family?
 Read an excerpt:

On Tuesday, Bonnie’s brothers arrived.
“We’re twins,” said Charlie.
“But I’m bigger,” said Harry.
“No, you’re not,” said Charlie. He punched Harry.
Harry whacked Charlie back.
“Don’t hit,” Alex told them.
They both stuck their tongues out at Alex.

In this sequel to WHAT'S A FOSTER FAMILY?, elementary-school-aged Alex York is about to gain not one, not two, but three forever siblings. But becoming a forever family isn't quite as smooth a road as Alex envisioned.

$2.99 eBook
$9.99 Print

Anne, What do you love about this book?
As a licensed foster parent, it hurts my heart to read about how short on foster homes America is. While the goal of foster care is to reunify children, that does not always happen and America is even shorter on adoptive families for those children who do end up needing a forever home. At this very moment, there are over 100,000 children in America who are unable to return to their bio-family and are waiting for an adoptive family. Over twenty thousand of those children will age out this year without finding an adoptive home. My goal with this picture book series was to heighten the awareness of the needs of children in the foster care system and encourage both parents and children to learn more about the most at-risk children around us.

If fiction, introduce us to your most influential secondary character; non-fiction, share the journey to your theme.

What do you hope readers will tell others about the book when they’ve finished reading?

I hope that children reading this book will enjoy the story and start asking the question, "What is a foster family?" I hope they will take that knowledge they've learned and use it to be kinder and more sympathetic to the foster children they meet at school or in their neighborhoods. Children in foster care are more likely to encounter bullying in their schools than other children, so it's important to teach our children empathy.

What are you reading now?
I'm actually in the middle of some counselor style books for continuing education as a counselor. One book about dialectic behavioral therapy for children with strong emotions has especially caught my interest. But as gripping as non-fiction can be, I'll always be a fiction lover at heart.

What’s next for you?
My Love and Warfare series, Christian love stories set during the time of the early church is currently being released. I have quite a few other historical romance book proposals out there so we'll see what contracts I get. I'd really like to break into non-fiction as well and write about mental health issues and apologetics.

About Anne:
Anne Garboczi Evans is a mental health counselor, military spouse, and mama to an opinionated little preschooler named "Joe-Joe." Anne and her husband are licensed foster parents in the state of Colorado and Anne has worked with foster children, adopted children, and forever families in her day job as a counselor.

children's fantasy author Teresa Schapansky

Children's Fantasy
for advanced readers ages 9-12

From the author:
Imogene is only five years old when her parents suddenly and mysteriously disappear. Left with no choice but to live with an abrasive relative, she finds comfort in the alliance she's forged with an unlikely friend. She secretly holds dear, her mother's last words. "Five years, Imogene. I shall come for you in five years." Imogene sadly soon learns, that things are not always as they seem. Upon reaching the age of ten, she has new confidence, and eagerly awaits her parents' return. Under the encouragement of her friend, Imogene embarks on a journey to an incredible world, learns who she really is, and where her true destiny lies.

My review:
Imogene of the Pacific Kingdom is a mix of other wildly popular adventures for younger readers, without the gore and murder situations found in stories for slightly older readers. The story is lengthy, with a vocabulary that may require occasional explanation.

A daughter is left in the care of an uncompassionate relative during her youth, and learns at age ten that she is no ordinary child. Imogene’s strange and compelling love of water nearly gets her in trouble with the relative who thinks perhaps soccer is more suitable. When the time is right, Imogene’s parents do not return…Imogene is drawn to them in their fantastic world. Imogene quickly adjusts to her new life with her quirky new gifts, until the Pacific Kingdom is in danger once more.

As the author notes, it’s up to Imogene to not only learn, but follow her true destiny. I tried to read the story through the eyes of a fourth or fifth grader and enjoyed Imogene’s spunk. As a parent and grandparent, however, I was sometimes dismayed at an occasional lapse of respect for adults, even if Imogene’s cantankerous aunt was quite over the top, Lemony Snicket-style. Although I imagine young readers won’t notice the healthy amount of exclamation points on a page, they really weren’t necessary as the dialog and action moved along just fine. I think the story would have been much stronger if the author had chosen only one or two characters to narrate, at least at one time, instead of an occasionally confusing multiple point of view style. That would have allowed Imogene to carry the story with her own heroism. Imogene of the Pacific Kingdom is aimed at older elementary school female readers, though boys would certainly find much to like as well.

By Carol Brown

Price paperback $11.99

From the Publisher:
Strange creatures are popping up all over the place on Farmer White's farm! What is a little pig supposed to do? Does she have to be polite? Should she just ignore them? And what if they're scary? How can you tell the difference between dangerous, or just different? That's what Sassy Pants has to learn when she wanders off by herself in places she isn't supposed to. But sometimes she learns the easy way, and sometimes the hard way. Which one will it be this time? And will she learn what's right in time to stay safe? Follow along with Sassy Pants and Friends, as they try to figure things out.

My review:
Delightful addition to the Sassy Pants middle grade readers. Sassy Pants is a little pig, a runt raised by the farm family and then returned to the pigpen where she has a lot to learn. In this tale, Sassy Pants learns from Old Clyde the horse that a strange new creature has come to Farmer White’s farm. He’s a llama with a big long name, but Sassy Pants calls him Mister One. None of the other animals want to disturb Mister One with his terrible nightmares and strange spitting ways, but Sassy Pants is determined to help the llama. She learns how when another strange creature shows up—an English bulldog and his captain, come for a visit. While none of the other animals want to even get close to the stinky bulldog, Sassy Pants persists and learns a valuable lesson about not just getting along, but helping each other even when we make mistakes.

Lovingly crafted illustrations and humor will add to the enjoyment of the these stories told by Sassy Pants herself.

From the publisher:
Charlie has a dilemma. Christmas is approaching and he wants to give his teacher a special gift. He’s been saving his money to purchase a present for Miss James but until he and Emma make a trip to visit Nana, he isn’t quite sure what he will do. Join Charlie and Emma as they learn more about the third jar — spending wisely — and why it’s just as important as the giving and saving jars. “Nana’s 3 Jars: Spending Wisely” is an interactive book for adults to read and then make hot chocolate mix with children using the recipe in the back of the book. It is the third and final book in the “Nana’s 3 Jars” series.

My review:
Carol Round’s delightful third book of her series of children’s stories with a moral is a great read with sweet illustrations to subtly teach children about giving gifts with a purpose. Gifts are personal and meaningful when they come from the heart and are created with thought, based on affordability. The stories are based on a lesson Charlie and Emma’s grandmother teaches about earning and saving money, when to give, and when to spend it. Charlie visits his grandmother on the farm and sees the perfect holiday gift for his teacher. His grandmother and mother help him create the gift using donations and purchased items from his savings for him to give.

Included in the book are the directions for this gift—hot chocolate mix in a jar, directions, as well as labels to create readers’ own Saving, Giving, Spending jars. Beautifully illustrated, not too long for a good sit-down read, and easily read.

Volumes One and Two, Giving Generously, and Saving Pennies, are available as well.
See Carol Round's Amazon Page, US, for more information.

About the Author, Carol Round
I am a transplanted Okie. I was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana. However, my parents, who were originally from the Sooner State, decided to return to their roots in 1969 when I was 16-years-old. Although I have only returned to my birth state three times, Oklahoma people still detect a bit of Cajun accent. I think that’s funny because they don’t think they have an accent.

No matter where I’m living—I’ve moved ten times since I graduated from high school—I love being outdoors any time of the year. Whether it is raining, snowing or the sun is shining or hiding behind a cloud, I prefer the beautiful landscape of God’s creation anytime. Being outdoors, even when I’m weeding my flowerbeds, helps me to reconnect with God.

Emma Right, Children's books, Kindle Fire giveaway

Synopsis Of While Princesses Sleep, Book 1 of the Princesses OF Chadwick Castle Series
by Emma Right

While Princesses Sleep: Princesses of Chadwick Castle Adventure, Book 1 (Princess Castle Adventure Mystery series) is a tale of two royal sisters who are princesses.

1. While Princesses Sleep
While Princesses Sleep, Princesses Of Chadwick Castle, Book 1

The Princesses Of Chadwick Castle Adventure is an eight-book series set in 19th century England. The adventure revolves around the sisters, Elle age 12, and Belle, 10. It’s great for readers who love Cinderella-type fairy tales and European princess stories.

While Princesses Sleep opens with the Princess Elle discovering a strange sound in the night. Curious, she determines the reason for these mysterious noises and starts the adventure with her sister, Belle. Something is afoot at the castle and they must find out what this is. However, finding the truth behind the secrets they stumble upon leads them to strange answers? What sort of trouble will the princesses get themselves into?

Frankly, I cannot believe that I’ve actually managed to finish the Princesses Of Chadwick Castle Adventure series—I call it The Princess Castle Series for short.  It took me a year to get them published which I suppose isn’t too long considering the fact that I not only had the story to write but also had to collect the images. It’s eight books in all and the word count for the entire series is about 50,000.

So why did I write a Princess series anyway?
Ever since I started watching Downton Abbey (not recommended for children) I’d been intrigued by the goings-on of life in a castle-like setting in England. So, why not a princess story of girls having an adventure with mystery intertwined and all of this taking place in a 19th century English setting? I told myself, it’d be a fun educational experience for my readers and they’ll get to enjoy a fast paced adventure, too!

Trouble was, most stories couldn’t hold the interest of both a five-year old and the attention of a twelve-year old at the same time. Believe it or not, this was one reason why I started writing. Both my Keeper of Reign series and now the Princess Castle series were written as a read-aloud. (Naturally, kids of eight or nine could read the Princess Castle books on their own.) But I wanted to go one step further with the books. I wanted to introduce readers to the magnificent world of art.

How I collected the artwork.
To be honest I have found it hard to have art books that hold museum pieces lying around the house because some of the artwork were not appropriate for kids under twelve or even for a young teen. (At least in my opinion.)

With the Princess Castle series, I’d carefully cropped and chosen the most appropriate art pieces that fit the story. Most of the art in the series is cropped so readers get to appreciate the details that went into the artist’s work—a hem here, a lacey sleeve there, a close-up of someone’s eyes. I must confess it wasn’t easy cropping and sizing the images to the correct proportions but I felt it was worth the pain I went through when I look at the final product. I hope the artwork would also gently inspire kids as they look at world renowned museum pieces and listen to or read the stories.

So why did I break the story into eight book?
With read-alouds I’d sometimes found it hard to stop –mostly because the kids will pester me to go on reading even when I was supposed to make lunch or dinner. The way I’d set up each book mothers, or father, or teachers, could read one book today and say, “Okay, book two starts tomorrow!” So each book is like a chapter book since the mystery continues and builds with each one and the issues get resolved in the eighth book.

I’d also learned from writing other series that readers don’t like to wait. (Sadly, I’ve actually gotten hate mail because of this! Talk about impatience.) Nonetheless, I’ve taken this into account and learned from this. Which is why I’d written all eight books, and published them all at the same time. No waiting! Yay!

However, because I’ve grown to love the characters of the two princesses, Elle and Belle, I’ve started on a second series that will hold its own set of mystery and intrigue. While the Princess Castle series deals with art and the end of each book introduce readers to a particular artist, the second series will have write-ups on ballet stories—like Giselle, and Swan Lake, etc.

A Note From Author Emma Right
I realize as a relatively new author readers might be hesitant to invest in the Princess Castle Books. So I’ve made it easy for everyone. The first book, While Princesses Sleep, is available for download in three formats (Kindle, Nook and pdf) if you go to the emmaright.com site, and the third book, Lady With the Circlet, will be gifted to all entrants in the Kindle Fire HD Giveaway I am hosting this month, April 2 to the 21st; the drawing will be on April 22.

Also, I am excited about the audio book for the first book, While Princesses Sleep. It was professionally read by a British voiceover artist--the story’s, after all, set in an English 19th century castle. For those who write me a review be sure to email me and I will send you the MP3 recording for free! I hope the children will enjoy this feature! They can listen and follow the story with their book—ebook or paperback.

Colors of Feelings is a great book about children who experience different feelings for each color of the rainbow.

My review:

Darling large format picture book with a four-stanza poem on the first pages and a longer one at the end. Features red (the color of my heart), orange, yellow (the golden sun), green, blue, pink, the color of a plum tree. Word choices are above most young readers, however the colors and simple illustrations format will draw your infant or toddler’s eyes and delight them; the rhythmic words create a pleasant sound, and the shortness will allow most readers to get through the story with a squirmy kid.

Book Review - Two Fun Children's Stories by Elizabeth Paige

Elizabeth Paige
Published Feb 2014 Moldable Clay
ISBN 1494790076
Print $6.99
E-book $1.99
Also in Spanish

From the Publisher: Age Level: 0 - 6 | Grade Level: P - K
Sue, the Boo-Hoo Moo Cow is an "udderly" ridiculous, silly, rhyming children's book about a moo cow named Sue who liked to wear one red shoe. Chaos ensues when the farmer decides that enough is enough, but finds that removing the shoe is really quite tough.

Laugh out loud as the farmer flies into the lake, the cow climbs up a ladder, 101 chipmunks get skunked, and the hen house gets just a little bit flatter!

In no time, kids will have the book memorized and want to read it again and again! It's great for story time, bedtime, anytime! And best of all, it blesses kids with the best medicine for a cold or a rough day--laughter!

My Review: Very fun read with awesome illustrations. Children love rhyme (and so do I). Reading Paige's story is a delight for both adults and kids. After you've read or chanted the words together, spend time pointing out attributes in the pictures, from the anxious sun in the second page to the goose's surprise, to everyone's satisfaction at the end. Highly recommended for anyone who needs a little fun break.

2005; second edition June 2014, moldable clay

E-book: $1.99
From the Publisher: Age Level: 0 - 6 | Grade Level: P - K
The Cat is Fat is a brightly illustrated, silly, rhyming story that children of all ages will love to read again and again! You'll laugh out loud at the funny antics and the chaos that was caused on a farm one day, when a fat cat forgot to chew on a tasty, old rat! Farmer Bob's peaceful farm was never the same!

My Review: In the fun tradition of Dr Suess and There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly, Paige's story of an accidental swallow which turned a farm into a zoo during all the fuss of dealing with the rat that should have been...chewed...will delight small and big readers. Paige illustrated this story with simple outline characters, like fat Gus and the farm animals, in bright colors kids enjoy. This story, and Sue the Boo-Hoo Moo Cow, with more mature artwork, will make great additions to your children's bookshelf.
