My Review

A drug cartel hidden in plain sight. When a small town Colorado detective gets a tip about a potential drug bust from an amateur sleuth with a passion for saving kids, everything goes wrong. Someone in the police department is lying and it’s up to the detective’s wife and friend to get to the bottom of mayhem in Pinion Creek.

High Deceit is the story of a fight against illegal drug trafficking, suspicion out of control, and ethics. There are quite a few threads running through the story, which is told in multiple viewpoints. High Deceit is part of a series, so all of the threads don’t wrap up neatly in this book.

I found it interesting and enjoyed working with Robin, the detective’s wife, as she and her friend tracked down suspects and went through their own angst about who to believe. Those who enjoy suspenseful, inspirational mystery series with large casts will enjoy these tales.

My Review

Set in lush fall east coast rural America, Wainwright’s Christian suspense shows how all things must work together in order to save a missing woman.

At the start, a young husband’s report of his bride’s disappearance seems uncomplicated at best, suspicious at worst. Luke knows only that although his wife’s car arrived at work, she didn’t show up at her historical interpretation position in the Colonial Williamsburg historical complex. Since it’s only been a couple of hours, Officer Cooper has nothing but gut instinct to go on when he agrees to check things out. As he gets deeper into the troubling situation, he begins to unravel a secret of despair that Luke’s wife, Julie, and mother-in-law are desperate to keep in the past.

Our past not only haunts us, it returns upon occasion to remind us that we are all imperfect creatures and secrets hurt and betray. When Julie decides to stomp the ugliness of her youth into the ground and share her newfound normalcy with joyous abandon when she marries Luke, her past rises up in an attempt to regain control of her life. Officer Cooper, a loner on the force, learns he must use the expertise of those around him, even if he doesn’t respect their intent or beliefs. Julie’s mother and husband must rely on the only course of action they have to help Julie, which is deep prayer, and the prayers of friends. Julie and Luke both understand that in desperate situations, they do the best they can and then rely on the One who is truly in control.

A few clever distractions briefly hide the depth of the crime, and overall good dialog and characters keep the reader turning pages. Those who love their crime stories interwoven with Christian prayer and moments of Christian gathering to soften the moments of violence will find much to appreciate in Wainwright’s newest book.

What do you love about this book?

I love the fast pace of Fatal Homecoming. I don’t enjoy scenes that slow the pace of a story, so I love that Fatal Homecoming moves quickly and with urgency.

Tell us about your favorite character in your new book.

I love Jessie Berns in Fatal Homecoming. She has a never give up tenacious attitude that drives Rick crazy but serves her well.

Share a couple of things you learned while researching or writing this story.

For Fatal Homecoming I interviewed an RCMP officer, kept a retired police officer (now private investigator) on speed dial, interviewed a paramedic, and spoke at length to a former police sniper. I learned so much about conducting an investigation and first responders to an emergency. It was very helpful because Jessie finds herself in several dangerous situations.  

What do you hope readers will tell others?

I hope they say the truths of God’s character, what He has done for them, and His great love for them lingers long after they close the book.

What are you reading now? I am reading Identity Theft – a nonfiction book. It’s GREAT.

What's next? I’m almost finished a second nonfiction title, Chasing Holiness. My next fiction project will be a sequel to Mistletoe Melody, which released in December 2018

This is my first series. I liked creating novellas about three feisty sisters who run an investigating firm. 

Share two things you learned while writing this book.

I learned a lot about poisonings, LOL and requirements needed to be an investigator in NC.

What can you tell us about the series?

It’s a Christian suspense about three sisters in a small town who deal with the same shortcomings all sisters do and ban together to solve crimes.  

What do you hope readers will tell others when they've finished the book?

That they enjoyed the series.

Lessons from David- How to be a Giant Killer by Andrew Wommack. I have a whole shelf of fiction TBR’s I need to tackle.

My review:

The motor-mouth princess, Rochelle “taking a stand against hell” freely opines from her conservative Christian radio talk show. Getting into trouble upon occasion comes with the territory, like from a politician exposed for corrupt practices, and all kinds of hate mail. When the hate mail has a stalker behind it, however, life turns upside down.

Glaz’s novel about wounded and empty souls will touch sore spots with readers. Many people walk around, hearing of God, but never really knowing Him, or understanding Him. While never leaping over the line of preaching, Glaz lets you know there’s a difference, and those who put actions and character behind what they profess about the Lord are at peace with their faith over the Sunday go-to-church, I’m-a-nice-guy believers.

Even as her character, Rochelle, fears for her life, she is able to affect those around her, such as her best friend co-worker and the co-worker’s pesky brother-in-law, Ed McGrath, celeb hockey star. Ed becomes Rochelle’s self-proclaimed protector, whether she wants him or not, and the two pursue a twisting and occasional rocky relationship. In a kind of weird parallelism, ghosts from Rochelle’s past and ghosts from a time of horror in international history haunt Rochelle and Detroit. Rochelle and Ed won’t let the past continue to destroy the future. These mysteries blend together for a suspenseful read.

I have to admit that I often buzzed through pages of “can I or can’t I” from Rochelle and Ed, but on the whole, Fear Is Louder than Words is an entertaining read. Recommended for those who enjoy conservative stances, a little bit of not too graphic gore in several arenas such as medical, physical attacks, hockey, the use of weapons, and don’t mind occasional suggestive language which fits the scenario.

Lynette Eason's novel about a forensic anthropologist has a very similar feel to my favorite television crime shows. The story is scary and a bit creepy—everything I like in a thriller. The missing element is the little details that male thriller writers like to stick in, like the model of the weapon and other little cop factlets. However, Eason's extensive research and attention to detail regarding skeletons and torture was plenty enough to keep me turning pages.

And that's the story line. Jamie Cash was victim number three of a mass murderer; only Jamie got away. Fifteen years later, just when Jamie's starting to get her life under control, the murderer decides to remind her how disappointed he was that she got away. His psychological taunting is eerie. Eason's hero, the lovelorn FBI Special Agent Dakota Richards, has plenty of secrets of his own to keep. These two lonely souls take a chance at love and fight for a relationship.

When the murderer starts taking serious shots at Jamie's family and Dakota, Jamie takes control of her fears. But will she keep that control when her worst nightmares come true? I didn't have to guess twice about the identity of the murderer, but I appreciated the intricacy of Eason's details.

Don't Look Back is a thrill-ride read. A couple typos were unusual for Revell, but they were in the beginning and didn't detract from the rest of the story. Readers who find Hannibal Lector stories or Ted Dekker a little intense, but enjoy the likes of Steven James, will find Eason's romantic suspense a little, but not much, kinder on the late night all-alone-in-the-dark senses.
