 Cotton
About the Book
Running from a life of poverty, 16 year old Cotton Ramsey escapes the Savannah River bottomland to New York. Twenty years later, she has changed her name and runs a large pharmaceutical company, which belonged to the family of her late husband. When Beau Simpson, her first love, arrives to deliver the news of her daddy’s untimely death, the life she struggled to leave behind calls her home.

My review
A little different take on the rags to riches story, Caine has created a fanciful tale with all the thrills of New York glamour. The story begins with a glimpse of the home life of poor share croppers in the rural south. Cotton is one daughter in a very large, struggling family growing, you guessed it, cotton. By the time she steals her opportunity to make a better life for herself, the story switches to decades later and another glimpse of the life she has won.

Alone, widowed, and running a company which we see very little of on her own, we learn that Cotton has cut ties so completely with her southern family that she doesn’t know of their own turnabout story. In fact, her beloved daddy had done well for the family after Cotton left. When she is informed of his mysterious death by none other than a lost love who also escaped into a glitzy world of unseemly wealth, she is ready to return to leave cold New York for her warm southern roots, no matter how welcome or unwelcome her long-lost siblings make her feel. But Cotton is still so uncertain of herself that she’s willing to let a soaring leap of willful misunderstanding drag her into despair. Along the way, Cotton learns how to appreciate the people around her and see life with a fresh outlook.

Told through two points of view, the reader sees both sides of the story through Cotton, and her love interest, Beau. Readers who love Jackie Collins and other writers of rich and famous romantic heroes and heroines will enjoy this story of learning what really matters.

Suddenly unemployed, petite and peppery Allie Masterson returns home to Cary, North Carolina to caddy for her father on the PGA Seniors Tour. There, she encounters Shoo Leonard.

The easygoing caddy drives Allie insane, but Shoo's uncanny ability to read the contours of the greens and his determination to overcome a personal hand injury, fascinate Allie. She finds herself agreeing use her sport science degree to become his trainer... and then she falls for him.

Shoo Leonard is grateful to Allie for her singular determination to get him ready for the PGA tour, but he isn't ready for anything more. Still raw from a broken engagement and focused on his career, he's content to be her fist-bumping buddy...but then he falls for her. What seems like a happily-ever-after on the horizon takes a turn when Allie decides she's become a distraction to Shoo's career. Is it time for her to step away or can the putting green whisperer find the right words to make her stay?

My review:
McCarthy’s latest novel digs into the lives of professional golfers and their caddies. When teens reunite as adults, sparks fly all over the place, and not all from romance.

Allie has finished college but has a lot of growing up to do. She’s quick to leap to conclusions about her family and her friends, and especially her faith. Shoo Leonard, nicknamed by his friends as a sure contender in the world of professional golf, is a man of deep faith and commitment. He’s watched what professional golf has done to take apart his family, and doesn’t want the same fate.

Allie and Shoo meet again as caddies on the senior golf tour, and learn they have a mutual passion—Allie to help golfers as a trainer, and Shoo to recover from an accident which might prevent him from realizing his dream. But their personal baggage is a lot to stumble over as their friendship develops.

When Allie realizes that so much of the hurt she’s bottled since her mother’s death was based on false assumptions, she has decisions to make. When clueless Shoo is whapped upside the head with the truth about relationships, his own choices challenge his commitment to his career.

I appreciate learning new things. I’m not a golfer, but I am fascinated by certain aspects of the sport and the role it’s played in other books I’ve read. While I also love that the author doesn’t try to complicate the story by adding useless details other golfers understand, I admit that any technicalities were lost on me. That didn’t mean I couldn’t enjoy the story—a romance is a romance. I liked the interplay between the characters, the camaraderie and rivalry, and learning that glamour doesn’t always trickle down.
The story is told in alternating voice between the main characters, showing their foibles and miscommunications. Recommended for those who enjoy contemporary clean romances, and especially those who are familiar with golf.

Mary, tell us what you love about this book.
I enjoyed plotting the story around Christmas and bringing Gabe back to a place where he can enjoy holidays’ again.

Do you prefer novellas to full-length works or vice versa? Why?
Novellas. Life is busy, I just don’t have time to read a 300 page novel. I guess my passion for reading shorter works rubbed off into my writing, I like creating novellas too.

What was the easiest aspect of telling this story?
Christmas makes us excited for new possibilities. I enjoyed Emilee’s expectations for the holidays.

What did you learn during your research?
A lot about private planes. J

What's your favorite Christmas tradition in your family?
I enjoy watching movies where families have a tradition. Our family never had one. Each year seems to present a unique situation, which requires adjustments for us to get together, it’s been hard to carry any customs over to the next year.

A Brief Interview with the Author

Alexis, what do you love about this book?

I love that I was able to explore my passion for wedding photography, broadcast journalism, good food, and Italy in this book!

Introduce us to your hippest side character.

Cameron is the “hippest side character” in this story. He’s Logan’s best friend and he calls it like he sees it. He doesn’t shy away from giving Logan honest answers when it comes to conflicts that Logan is experiencing in his quest to win Michelle’s heart and the approval of Michelle’s family.

Best of all, Cameron is a true friend. He’s good for Logan and very helpful.

What do you hope readers will tell others when they’re finished with the book?

I hope that readers will tell others that this is a good book that both challenged the way that they may have thought about different real-life issues like interracial dating, and encouraged their heart.

What are your favorite types of stories to read during the holidays?

My favorite type of stories to read during the holidays is Christmas stories by my favorite authors! Even better, I love watching Christmas movies on the Hallmark Channel!

What’s next for you?

I’m working on book number four which is a story that focuses on food, forgiveness, Paris (France) and romance.

Karen Cogan holiday treat new romance

Made For Each Other, Grandma Mandy Book 1
Karen Cogan
Contemporary Inspirational Romance series
Karen Cogan Books, release: December 1
E-book $2.99

Buy on Amazon

About the Book:
When Lissa arrives in Farmington, Grandma is recovering from a mild illness. Her artist friend, Jason, picks Lissa up from the airport. Though their attraction to one another is immediate, Lissa refuses to be tempted into romance with a man in Jason’s occupation. She has been influenced by her mother to believe anyone in a creative job has the potential for ruin and starvation. These childhood teachings drove Lissa to actions for which she now carries a guilty secret. Although Jason is handsome and considerate, Lissa is wary and feels it is better to have a husband with a secure job than one who is at the mercy of public trends.

Jason is determined not to fall for another committed career woman, and risk the pain of breaking up, as he did with his former fiancĂ©. Taking second place to his wife’s work is not what he wants in a marriage. In addition, he takes his faith seriously and worries about Lissa’s ambivalent relationship with God.

Will past experiences stand in the way of their relationship or will they grow together to find true love?

A brief interview with the Author:
Karen, what do you love about this story?
In MADE FOR EACH OTHER, I love how the romance develops over the course of the story to resolve the trust issues of Jason and Lissa.

Share one or two things you learned about the subject.
You can’t force romance to develop. It has to come naturally from the needs and character traits of the characters.

Introduce us to your most influential sidekick.
My most influential sidekick is my little dog who lies on the floor sleeping near my feet. He always trusts I’ll come up with and answer for anything. Such unconditional trusts spills over to everything, including an answer when I get stuck in a plot.

What do I want readers to tell others when they’ve finished?
I want them to tell others that God has a plan for every life and He will lead us into the right decisions if we wait and trust.

What are you reading right now?
I am reading Dean Koontz’s The Crooked Staircase because I love his way with words and his exciting plot twists.

What’s next?
I will be working on releasing the second book in the Grandma Mandy Series. MADE FOR EACH OTHER is the first book. LANDSCAPE OF LOVE is the second and will be a free download.

About the Author:
Karen was born and reared in Houston, Texas. While still loyal to her home state, she enjoys the beautiful scenery of New Mexico, where she now lives with her family and a myriad of pets. http://karencogan.com/

A brief interview with the Author

Alexis, what do you love about this book?
I love that the hero and heroine of my book are both print journalists and that I was able to draw on my real-world experience as a newspaper journalist as I wrote Marc and Traci’s story!

Introduce us to your easiest character to write.
My easiest character to write was Traci’s best friend Carla. She’s fun, kind, smart, sassy and sweet. She’s a good friend to Traci, the kind of friend you can count on in just about any situation. They met at work, bonded and became best friends over time.

What do you hope readers will tell others when they’re finished with the book?
I hope that readers will tell others that this book made them laugh out loud, smile and maybe even cry tears of joy.

Was there a particular book that moved you to tears lately?
The only book I ever read that moved me to tears was Don’t Die, My Love by Lurlene McDaniel. I read it when I was a pre-teen. It’s a truly touching, beautiful story that I still remember as an adult.

What’s next for you?
Well at the time after A Second Chance was published in January 2017, I was starting to write my most recent release, which is Love in Pictures. So that is what was “next” back then! I’m writing my answers to this question in the year 2018. See my book promo for Love in Pictures on Lisa’s blog to find out what’s next for me as of November 2018.

Manhattan Grace by Clarice James

Manhattan GraceManhattan Grace
Clarice G. James

Elk Lake Publishing
June 1, 2018
eBook $7.99
Print $12.99

About the Book:
When a door opens for Gracie Camden to leave Cape Cod and move to Manhattan as a nanny for a Juilliard drama instructor, she fully expects God to use her acting talent and launch her to stardom. She’s been here been six months. What’s taking him so long?

Seymour Kaufman relocates to New York City from Iowa due to a shortage of mohels (circumcisers) in the tri-state Messianic congregations. Secretly, he hopes to explore a deeper relationship with Metropolitan Opera star and fellow Moldovan, Polina Zelenka. Seymour is conflicted when he meets her less complicated, widowed cousin.

Meanwhile, fresh from Palm Beach, the Chief plans to cap off his short yet lucrative career as an international jewel thief with a multi-million dollar heist during the Met’s gala in Polina’s honor. His usual modus operandi is to work alone—but this time is different.

While Seymour celebrates every closed door by believing God will open a better one, Gracie whines and wonders why God doesn’t bless her plans. Gracie finally learns success is not about making it big in the Big Apple, but about living God’s perfect plan for your life.

My Review
I just like these characters and this fun story. Gracie has a ways to go to grow up, but don’t we all? I loved her grandmother who kept her grounded with fun sagacity and the always funny “say goodnight, Gracie” schtick that never grows old. I thought Seymour was a hoot, especially since I have family near Postville and really enjoy hearing how people adapt to the craziness of America.

I wondered how on earth these two stories were going to intertwine and, while I occasionally got a little impatient waiting for something to happen, was thoroughly entertained by a jewel thief, ala Cary Grant, prepping for his biggest heist. I figured out several whos, and loved finding out the why, which all came together in a symphonic, justifiable end.

Written from multiple viewpoints, readers follow a young woman on her way to fame and fortune and a middle-aged Jewish immigrant on the hunt for his soulmate. Strangers not for long in the Big Apple, they blunder and assist each other to the good and Godly life.

About the Book
He wants a second chance. She says there's no going back. Ten years ago, a public disgrace sent Jenna Jenkins running from her hometown. Now, the success of her professional future hinges on joining her hometown church restoration project. Her partner and team leader on the job is William Scott—expert renovator, volunteer fireman, and the ex-flame who ruined her life.  William is in crisis, facing the tightening screws of personal and professional failure. When the interior designer on the church renovation project turns out to be Jenna Jenkins, William sees it as a chance to make amends. But Jenna wants nothing to do with him.  How much will William sacrifice to redeem his mistakes and prove his love? Can Jenna protect her heart this time or will William break her for good?

My Review
Reunions aren’t always what they’re cracked up to be. A decade should have healed all the hurt, but once Jenna sees William, the former high school love who crushed nearly everything about her in a senior joke gone horribly wrong, it’s like reliving the whole nightmare over again. Compounded by a gruesome marriage in between, Jenna can’t seem to catch a break. Sure, she’s grown up and successful, even finally well-put-together enough to rival the former cheerleading crew who gave her grief in high school, but the victory is hollow considering the changes that have occurred in her hometown during her absence.

A boost to get her interior decorating column in national syndication drives her home to help renovate a church. On television, no less, as the builder is trying out for a reality show. Her job is the inside. And to work with the building contractor who turns out to be none other than the young man from the disastrous high school prom night now turned into a real home town hero. The ten-year cushion may have helped them step back and put their lives into perspective, but accident on accident, misunderstandings, false pride, and a potential health crisis will most likely derail any possible romantic chance they might have had unless they can slow down and really listen to each other.

Beautifully written well-developed characters and story lines drive this lovely story of getting past some really bad choices and learning how to be gracious and forgive. These people have a long way to go by story’s end. They’re not perfect, though they have a conscience and will get there. I appreciate a good tale that doesn’t sugarcoat everything. Told through the two main character’s perspectives, I occasionally felt like I was missing something when I realized time had elapsed between the opposing narrator, but that’s natural and real. Those who enjoy highly inspiration elements in a romance between hard-bitten and twice-shy people will find a lot to love about this contemporary romance set in Michigan.

About the book
With her leg finally back at full strength and her emotional life taking on a whole new shape, Rachel Cooper feels fit to handle the confluence of four major events: the end of another school year, the beginning of a new relationship, the stress of helping to plan a wedding, and Coach's insistence that Rachel overcome a mental block and master the flying teep kick.

Meanwhile, Rachel draws the focus of some strong male attention. While she isn't sure what it all means, she's determined not to write an alternate story in her head by pitting herself as the main character in yet another imagined thriller.  But in her determination not to make the same mistake a third time, Rachel ignores danger signs. Will Rachel manage to separate fact from fiction before it's too late?

My  review
This is one of those stories that encompasses all the fun of chick lit, light romance, good clean stalking, and a couple of good laughs.
New Year’s resolutions are made to be broken—unless you’re Rachel, and have been taking yourself way too seriously for the past couple of years. A high school teacher (and thank you from ALL of my heart for not villainizing teachers!), Rachel is a rare good woman who has the loving support of friends and sister on her quest to learn to take care of herself and find a good man—someone who can handle a little blood now and then and appreciates all of her friends, especially the pal who asks her to stand up with him at his wedding.
Unbreakable is the third book in a group of stories featuring Rachel Cooper and her antics. While it was obvious there were previous tales, it wasn’t necessary to have read them first. Instead, the mention of the other stories did what they were supposed to, which was make me curious to read them.
Readers who enjoy quirky and spunky female characters who manage to find themselves in predicaments, and love some clean wholesome romance, will enjoy Ruth’s stories.

About the Book:
Beautiful, creative Amber Warren and handsome, dependable Jesse Nelson have been best friends since grade school. Jesse’s strength and reliable spirit draws Amber, but can she trust a man with her heart after being jilted by her fiancĂ©? A strong and self-reliant woman, Amber discovers she will need someone to help her after unexpected news from her parents upends her world. Will Jesse meet the demands of his work and still step up to be the rock she can lean on? An unlikely source will help Amber conquer the menacing and paralyzing fear gripping her heart. In the midst of a devastating disaster she pulls from deep within her being the courage to look fear in the eye to save the one she loves.

My Review:
This charming, sweet novella is a perfect addition to Fuson’s growing repertoire of both contemporary and historical tales set generally in her stomping grounds of the western US and Colorado. Amber’s fiancĂ© wanted more of the world than he was willing to share and ditched her for the opportunity to work in Paris. I might have wondered why Amber wouldn’t jump at Paris until I realized Mr. Wrong didn’t bother to spend much time discussing it, and neither was Amber’s heartstrings too firmly attached to the cad. Better opportunities were right under her nose, and it took only a little persuading to open her eyes to the good thing waiting just for her. I loved it when she realized just how interwoven Jesse’s life was with hers when he knew his way around the family kitchen.

Conquering challenges and rising above the hurt others put on them show Amber and Jesse how strong they are together. Add in Miss Purrfect, the darling antique store cat, and we’ve got a very fun read. Highly recommended for those who like their clean romance in bite-size chunks.

A brief Interview with the Author:
In A Sparkle of Silver, Purrfect is the sweet store cat. The antique store where she reigns supreme is named Preowned Perfection. So, Purrfect got her name. She is a pure white cat with green eyes. For the most part she doesn’t interact with patrons but occasionally she can’t help herself. She might follow a customer through the store but not in a typical fashion. She loves to roam the mock or staged rooms along the top of the partial walls that are a whopping ten feet tall with a span of another six feet above that. The cat is a great mouser and yet doesn’t displace breakables off the shelves. Purrfect is a good judge of character which we find out in the pages of the story.

Tell us about your motivation to write the story, Robin. What do you love about it?
This book was fun to write for a variety of reasons. I love antique stores. Finding the right wedding ring set was tons of fun. Writing a story where Colorado is the backdrop is a delight because It’s my home. I identify with the character, Amber. She dresses nicely even to go to the grocery store which is what I typically do. She loves antiques and working with her hands. She is strong but doesn’t always give herself credit for being so. Amber has a deep fear that she has to work through. Don’t we all struggle at some point in our lives with fear? Her handsome sweetheart, Jesse, is a good fit for her. Attentive to her needs and strong both emotionally and physically he helps her through encouragement and lending a hand when she asks. He is purposeful and yet can be spontaneous.

Nice! I agree! Can you share a couple of things you learned while working on this book?
I spent hours delving into research on antiques that still pop up on the ads on my computer. For instance, Amber bids on and purchases an antique cuckoo clock. I pulled up a picture of the clock to make the description in the book. I’ve been to auctions in the area, so I could write that into my story through my experience. The store where she works is similar to ones I walked through on Broadway in Denver. I added a warehouse and attached a house for her to live. Something that I had not known before was, for a price, you can have a new piece of furniture or knickknack made that appears like the original antique.

I also learned that help to overcome fear can come from an unsuspecting place and love will be the necessary strength it will take to conquer that fear.

What’s next for you, Robin?
Right now, I’m writing a historical mystery novella, Gamble on Fate, set in Colorado Territory of 1886 in Colorado City near present day Colorado Springs with a Pinkerton investigator. Also, for a few years, I’ve been working on a contemporary cozy mystery novel, The Race of Her Heart, that is set in Durango, Colorado. In this story, a ski Olympian has an accident, dashing her hopes and dreams. The tumble down the mountain was caused by someone tampering with the bindings of her skis. The saboteur is not satisfied with only the limp caused from the fall and the threats keep coming.

Robin Densmore FusonOh my goodness! I can’t wait to read them. Thank you, Robin
