  • Encouragement for grandmothers to be spiritual mentors in their families

My Review:

Kimberley Payne’s latest addition to her lengthy repertoire of bite-size live-by-faith books, Grand Faith: Words of Wisdom to Leave a Spiritual Legacy, come from her experience of becoming a grandmother. She wanted to model her faith for her grandchildren, and reached out to other grandparents for inspiration.

With twenty-five interviewees responded to several questions about how they raised their own children, advice, caution, activities, favorite Bible verse and prayer.

Payne’s book is both a spiritual how-to and a call to action. She asks her readers to respond to her book and share your own grandparenting stories; to “create a community of wisdom and support.” What a wonderful rallying call.

My favorite pearls of wisdom include read God’s word with your biological or “adopted” grands especially age-appropriate Bible versions, pray with and for them constantly; always encourage them. don’t pretend you know everything, and realize you can’t be perfect.

One thing I missed was how the author chose these participants. Nevertheless, it’s a great group of special, inspiring women from Canada and the US who offer guidance and enthusiastic support for grandparents everywhere to lead a life worthy of our calling. The author includes a chart of favorite Bible verses and pages of resources to follow up. Grand Faith is a grand addition to your arsenal of faith. I believe parents and future parents would also find much to learn from in the pages.

My Review
In her new book, Payne sets out to expound with sincere simple kindness many of the questions and sometimes their answers regarding what makes the Bible so fascinating.

Often using examples of three, easy to remember, the author begins by sharing why and how to read the Bible, why it’s trustworthy, and why the Old and New Testaments work together.

Along the way the author uses examples from her own family about teaching and living the doubts we all have about faith, God, morality, and history. Why should we follow any of the Biblical “rules” if they no longer make sense? This is the topic of the segment “Should We Follow All the Laws in the Bible Today?”

Payne, a prolific author, shares in these lovely essays examples of how and life are deeply woven, no matter what you believe. The joy of finding lost ones; what about baptism, prayer—to whom, when, keeping a journal, what to do with your doubts, and even how to know if you’ve committed the unforgiveable sin of blasphemy. I appreciate the author’s candidness, the ways she shares how she came to understand what she believes, and even the learning curve. For example, learning about prophetic utterances had some unintended consequences. Payne took the time to learn more about her experience with a pastor she trusted, and realized there were better ways to share messages in faith.

Still Learning sets out to do what it promises: celebrate the beauty of faith and inquiry. Most topics include scriptural references, but are not set up in traditional devotional ways. Most of these 100 topics are a couple of pages long and easy to read and ponder. Recommended for inspirational readers teen and up who enjoy exploring matters of Christianity.

Lisa Lickel's Review
Wow, this is a great little book! I rarely get excited about non-fiction, but Kimberley Payne’s fitness books are packed with great advice and practical tips. Get the Skinny is an excellent addition. Filled with common-sense information and personal observation, Payne truly does answer, realistically, questions many of us feel too stupid to ask, or didn’t realize there was even an option.

Some of my favorites are about how muscle turns to fat when we age and stop working out (it doesn’t), and whether walking with weights makes a difference (it does but probably not in the way you think). Why can’t I spot-reduce, and how to buy a sports bra—just great advice, backed not just by the most reputable medical research results, but experience. Personally, I’m more likely to follow tips by someone who’s walking the walk; not just telling me how, but explaining why. Get the Skinny is a practical guide for today’s practical lifestyle choices.

Kimberley, what do you love about this book?
It’s like having your own personal trainer but without the cost.

How did you decide on your topic and what do you hope readers will learn?
As a former personal trainer, I often came across the same questions time and again. I wrote this book to help the reader wade through the myths and misconceptions that are out there. But it's also an awareness program. The reader is accountable to record their activities, and this helps to recognize where their strengths are and what areas they need to improve. Finally, it's a lifestyle change. Over the 7 weeks, the reader will gain habits that last a lifetime.

Share two things you learned about yourself, your setting, or the publishing world while writing this book.
I learned that prayer & Bible study are to the spirit what exercise and healthy eating are to the body, and I want to share this with women.

Lisa: Amen!

What are you reading now?
The Jesus Centred Bible.

What’s next for you?
I plan to continue to walk the talk and share my insights with women on my blog.

Explore the Bible and learn from God’s creation. This entertaining and educational book offers children loads of fun. At the same time they’ll be learning about the Bible.

Inside its pages you’ll find:
 ·         Bible stories told from the viewpoint of the tree
·         Fast facts to help identify the specific tree
·         An activity to help reinforce the truth in the lesson
·         Challenging questions to support each story
·         Glossary and “People of the Bible” sections at the back of the book define words which are highlighted in bold
·         Project suggestions to enhance your learning

This engaging and instructive book is a colourful introduction to trees, leaves and their corresponding Bible stories. It’s ideal for 7 to 9 year olds, for home or school use and classroom sharing in grades 2/3 to supplement the Life Sciences Curriculum on Plant Life.

What you love about your new book – I love the colours and entertaining nature of the book. Who knew that learning could be so much fun!

A new lesson you learned during the publication of this book – Edit, edit, edit. Although this isn’t new to me, I found it was something I couldn’t go over lightly.
